The Many Loves of Freddy Widgeon

Story

It is said among London's gilded youth, that, if all the girls Freddy Widgeon loved and lost were placed end to end, they would reach halfway down Picadilly - or further, as some of them were pretty tall. One Spring and Summer, he managed to win the hearts of six young pippins in a row - managing to win - and lose - one young lady per month, from April through September.

Freddy being a sort of an equal opportunity chump, managed to select blondes, brunettes, and redheads (approximately two of each) to fall madly in love with. No two were of the same description, however, for three of them were short, petite girls, and three were statuesquely tall. He managed not to repeat any combination of size and coloration.

His friends became so used to seeing him with a new popsie on his arm every time they saw him, that they rather lost track of which girl was which, and only managed to recall scattered details.

Here then, are the known facts about Amelia, Beatrice, Clarice, Dianne, Elizabeth, and Florence, if you can unscramble whom Freddy fell for in what month, and her height and haircolor.

Note! Some of the information in the paragraphs above is essential. Read it carefully and note all points specified.

Clues

  1. The tall, red-haired girl wasn't Amelia.
  2. In April and May, he courted both Beatrice and a redhead, in some order.
  3. The young ladies he was smitten with in June and July were Elizabeth and a very petite young lady (who was not a brunette) - but it is not certain which was first.
  4. In August and September, he was seen wooing a brunette and Florence, in some order.
  5. Both Beatrice and Clarice were less than 5 foot two inches tall (that's pretty short, for you metric thinkers).
  6. Freddy fell for Elizabeth on the rebound from a Redhead, but at some point before Clarice.
  7. The only time when he fell for the same haircolor twice in a row was in July and August.

Solving Tips

Use an X when you are sure that two fields do not match. Use a dot when you are sure that two fields do match. Click once to place an X. Click a second time to place a dot. Click a third time to clear the box.

Select marker color by clicking the colored radio buttons. You can use colored marks to indicate which clue provided a value, or to indicate a guess that might not be correct, or just because you like solving puzzles in teal.

Use the "Save" button to save a puzzle in progress. Use the "Load" button to reload the puzzle. This feature uses cookies - fear not, we aren't tracking you or stealing credit card numbers (we couldn't, even if we wanted to.) At the moment, only one puzzle may be saved at a time on each computer (unless using different browsers or accounts). There is no warning if you save over another puzzle, and no undo!

Use the "Current Solution Window" button to parse the grid for your solution. This feature simply looks for dots in the top set of rows and creates a list that you can copy and paste into your email for submission.

If you want to clear the grid and start over, just refresh the page. Note that there is a bug in IE6 (and possibly other browsers), so that if a color other than the default is selected, that color may appear to be selected after the reload, but the actual color used will be the default.
