Story

McGarry

McGarry, bartender extraordinaire to the Eggs, Beans and Crumpets of the Drones Club, has been trying to invent a new cocktail to enter in the international medals competition slated for the British Exhibition New Year's Day. With several Drones volunteering as guinea pigs, he has feverishly concocted five beverages from these four ingredients:

Each cocktail contains a different combination of two (and only two) of the above fluids. The beverages are named (variously) the Old School Tie, the Piperino, the Rosy Cheeked Lad, The Silken Sledgehammer, and last but not least, the Trojan Horse (note: the reader may know one or more of these beverages by some other, more modern name). McGarry has seen fit to garnish each of the drinks with one of the following: a paper flag, a sprig of mint, a licorice stick, a cucumber spear, and a tin whistle.

Can you determine from the 8 clues below, the contents and garnish of each drink?

Clues

  1. All of the cocktails had an alcoholic content.
  2. Monty Bodkin tried both the Piperino and the drink decorated with a sprig of mint; in doing so, he consumed all four of the liquid ingredients.
  3. One member enjoyed the tin whistle (which didn't adorn the Silken Sledgehammer) that came with his coconut milk-laced cocktail.
  4. One Drone was disappointed to learn that the Trojan Horse contained no rum.
  5. The Rosy Cheeked Lad and the cocktail garnished with the licorice stick both contained Sloe Gin.
  6. Gussie Fink-Nottle consumed the patriotic snootful festooned with a paper flag (but not the Piperino), thinking that it was plain orange juice.
  7. The Drones were relieved to note that the beverage garnished with the cucumber spear contained no coconut milk.
  8. The five cocktails were: the drink with the tin whistle garnish, the Old School Tie, the cooler with the sprig of mint, the Piperino, and the potent potation made of rum & sloe gin on crushed ice.

Use an X when you are sure that two fields do not match. Use a dot when you are sure that two fields do match. Click once to place an X. Click a second time to place a dot. Click a third time to clear the box.

Select marker color by clicking the colored radio buttons. You can use colored marks to indicate which clue provided a value, or to indicate a guess that might not be correct, or just because you like solving puzzles in teal.

Use the "Save" button to save a puzzle in progress. Use the "Load" button to reload the puzzle. This feature uses cookies - fear not, we aren't tracking you or stealing credit card numbers (we couldn't, even if we wanted to.) At the moment, only one puzzle may be saved at a time on each computer (unless using different browsers or accounts). There is no warning if you save over another puzzle, and no undo!

Use the "Current Solution Window" button to parse the grid for your solution. This feature simply looks for dots in the top set of rows and creates a list that you can copy and paste into your email for submission.

If you want to clear the grid and start over, just refresh the page. Note that there is a bug in IE6 (and possibly other browsers), so that if a color other than the default is selected, that color may appear to be selected after the reload, but the actual color used will be the default.
