Blandings Hide 'n' Seek

Story

No one but Clarence took alarm when the Earl of Emsworth's favorite book "Whiffle on Pigs" disappeared, for Emsworth was always misplacing things. However, when Galahad Threepwood's Memoirs, the Empress's trophy cup, Lady Constance's lorgnette, and Beach the Butler's decanter of port turned up missing, the alarums became general, and Lady C called in Rupert Baxter to find the missing items. Clarence had put his foot down and refused to hire Baxter as secretary on the grounds that Baxter was potty, but Constance sought to prove him wrong.

"When you see how efficiently Baxter finds these objects," Constance told her brother, "You will be forced to admit that he is not a lunatic and would be invaluable as your secretary." She instructed Baxter to report to her as soon as he found one of the missing items, leaving the item in situo res, so that he would have a witness to his discovery.

Whereupon Galahad rallied the anti-Baxter forces of Blandings Castle to dog Baxter's footsteps and foil his detective work. Being hideously efficient, Rupert Baxter did, in fact, find the misplaced items in the Rose Garden, in Constance's boudoir, in Lord Emsworth's study, in the Empress's pigsty, and in the butler's pantry, but as soon as he located one and went to report his finding, one of the Allies (Gally, Clarence, Beach, gardener Angus, and pigman Geo. Cyril Wellbeloved) would glom onto the treasure and move it to another one of the same five locations and hide it again.

Thus, when Baxter announced to Lady Constance, "I have discovered the whatchamacallit in the thingummy", she would swiftly learn that the whatchamacallit was nowhere near the thingummy, and Baxter was left looking like an utter looney once again. It was all very confusing, and not sorted out until Baxter had been removed in a plain van and the Blandings defenders compared their very confusing notes to determine where everything really was.

Can you, with the help of the 7 clues given, help determine who tracked Baxter to which location, and moved what object to which new location?

Clues

  1. Clarence took one of Baxter's discoveries and hid it in Lady Constance's boudoir.
  2. Baxter reported finding Lady Constance's lorgnette in the butler's pantry, but she gave him the woogly eyeball when it wasn't there after all.
  3. Someone relocated the decanter of port in a certain location just after Geo. Cyril Wellbeloved left there with another of Baxter's finds in his pocket.
  4. While Baxter announced that he had found the Empress's trophy cup in one location, someone was smuggling it into the Rose Garden.
  5. All of the objects were moved either to or from an outdoors location (i.e. the rose garden or pigsty) except for the item that was highjacked from the boudoir to the pantry.
  6. Beach followed Baxter as he discovered the Whiffle book on pigs, and he dutifully snuck the thing off to one of the other locations.
  7. Gally absconded with the item Baxter found in the pigsty and placed it safely elsewhere.

Use an X when you are sure that two fields do not match. Use a dot when you are sure that two fields do match. Click once to place an X. Click a second time to place a dot. Click a third time to clear the box.

Select marker color by clicking the colored radio buttons. You can use colored marks to indicate which clue provided a value, or to indicate a guess that might not be correct, or just because you like solving puzzles in teal.

Use the "Save" button to save a puzzle in progress. Use the "Load" button to reload the puzzle. This feature uses cookies - fear not, we aren't tracking you or stealing credit card numbers (we couldn't, even if we wanted to.) At the moment, only one puzzle may be saved at a time on each computer (unless using different browsers or accounts). There is no warning if you save over another puzzle, and no undo!

Use the "Current Solution Window" button to parse the grid for your solution. This feature simply looks for dots in the top set of rows and creates a list that you can copy and paste into your email for submission.

If you want to clear the grid and start over, just refresh the page. Note that there is a bug in IE6 (and possibly other browsers), so that if a color other than the default is selected, that color may appear to be selected after the reload, but the actual color used will be the default.
